In this recent activity, 4th grade students in Mrs. Protano's class explored fractions in a creative way by using their own names! Students counted how many letters there are in their name, and then represented that number as a fraction. Based on the total number of letters in their name, students then shaded in a part of a whole. Next the students created a number line showing their name as a fraction, helping them understand how fractions can be represented visually. Lastly, the children counted the vowels and consonants in their name. They then calculated and explained. This activity helped students practice counting, creating fractions, and understanding the concepts of parts of a whole, as well as vowels and consonants in a fun and personal way!
