Music Education

The comprehensive Music Education of the students begins in the Elementary Schools (K-5) with General Music. In the primary years, students work on basic skills such as movement to a steady beat and use of singing voice. The primary level concludes with 3rd grade recorder experiences and the selection of a musical instrument. Students in 4th and 5th grade continue to attend weekly General Music, while also having the opportunity to begin Instrumental and Choral instruction.

Upon entering Berner Middle School, students select their musical experiences. They can choose to continue in Performing Music (Band, Orchestra, or Chorus) or to enroll in General Music. Opportunities exist outside of the instructional day as well, with Advanced Ensembles and the Berner Middle School musical.

At the Massapequa High School level, at both the Ames and Main campuses, students are encouraged to continue their musical studies. Colleges like to see students have continued their artistic endeavors. Most schools look beyond the academics of applicants to find other skills and activities they can bring to a college campus. Continuation in music is one predictor colleges use to assess a prospective student’s probability of success at the Collegiate level.

Beginning Band and Orchestra

Students become eligible to participate in the Instrumental Music Program upon completion of third grade. We strongly recommend that all students who show potential and interest should enroll in this program.

In the spring, music teachers meet with Grade 3 students to discuss their interest in playing an instrument. Teachers will make their professional recommendation for an instrument best suited to the student. Students will be given the opportunity to see the different instruments they can play.

There will be an informational meeting for parents of beginner students where the Instrumental Music Program will be explained and parents will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Tri-M Music Honor Society

The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for high school students. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel in music and leadership. Students must reach rigorous criteria for acceptance into the honor society. Tri-M is a program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)
