Berner Students Explore Thermal Energy and Heat Transfer

Sixth graders in Matt Cunha's science classes at Berner Middle School participated in a hands-on project to explore thermal energy and heat transfer. The young scientists learned about conductors and insulators. Students brought in materials from home, such as cardboard boxes, aluminum foil, bubble wrap, cotton balls and Styrofoam, to create an insulated box. They worked in teams to make a box that could keep a piece of ice frozen as long as possible. Students put the blocks of ice in their boxes, left them overnight and checked on the results the next day.
