Unqua Book Club students reading together

Fifth graders at Unqua Elementary School are boosting their literacy skills in student-led book clubs. The initiative in Alyssa Yablansky's class encourages students to dive into reading with enthusiasm.

Students select their reading partners as well as their favorite genres and books. The goal is to foster a love of reading as students engage in meaningful discussions with their peers. They utilize strategies learned in class to analyze different literacy elements and text features.

Each participant contributes to a personalized bookmark that documents his or her insights and discoveries during each meeting of the book club.

"This collaborative approach not only enhances their reading experience," Ms. Yablansky said, "but also strengthens their understanding of literary elements."
