Massapequa High School senior Ryan Keane has been named a finalist in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. He advanced from the semifinalist round and was among approximately 15,000 students nationwide to qualify as a finalist.

Ryan was recognized for his distinguished performance and high potential. He is currently in the process of selecting a college for the fall with plans to major in computer science. For a career, Ryan would like to specialize in the development of artificial intelligence.

Since ninth grade at the Ames Campus, Ryan has taken at least one computer science course per year. As a senior, he is doing an internship in the Exploring the Language of Python class, in which he supports the teacher and helps other students.

Ryan attended Fairfield Elementary School and is active in student life at the high school as a member of Mathletes, Science Olympiad, the National Honor Society and German Honor Society. Recently, he medaled at the Science Olympiad regional competition in a robotics event.

On being named a National Merit finalist, Ryan said, “It’s great. It shows that I studied hard and I took challenging courses that helped prepare me.” Among those high-level courses were Advanced Placement Calculus, AP Physics and AP Research.

Ryan will now compete for one of 6,870 scholarships, which include National Merit, corporate-sponsored and college-sponsored financial awards. Those scholarship winners will be announced in May.

“Ryan is a brilliant, curious and progressive thinker, whose achievements place him near the top of his class,” said his guidance counselor, Victoria Rimbert. “His academic accomplishments are well earned, and I am so very proud of his hard work over the years. Ryan’s strength of character, passion for learning and determination are exceptional. I am so excited for him to continue onto the next chapter, as he enters his college years and beyond.”
